World Juniors: Blackhawks Prospects Sunday Showdown

Published

on

The inevitable happened. The six Blackhawks prospects on two national teams will run smack dab into one another on Sunday when the United States and Slovakia will meet up. A narrow 4-3 US win over Czechia made it possible, which means now dynamo Frank Nazar will take his six points against steady Adam Gajan who has been all but unbeatable for Slovakia.

It’ll be a pretty early wake up call for those who want to watch it, a local time of 5am–harkening back to the Olympic games that beckoned for early risers–and loads of coffee to go with the hockey.

But for those who love the international flavor and watching prospects, this is can’t miss hockey.

Blackhawks Prospects To Watch

For the United States, it’s been all about Nazar–who has been absolutely dynamite in his three games so far. Whether it’s a saucer or stretch pass, the Michigan Wolverine forward has demonstrated why the Blackhawks traded Kirby Dach to the Montreal Canadiens in order to get the 13th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. Nazar was considered an analytics darling, one who had rocketed up the board and caught the eye of many an executive.

The last few days have shown why. Nazar’s speed combined with his high hockey IQ has delighted not only Blackhawks fans dreaming of his future in the iconic Original Six sweater, but also those partisan Americans hoping to see World Juniors Gold.

Imagine if he can find the back of the net against the other Hawks prospect–and potential future teammate in Adam Gajan.

The Slovakian netminder had been lights out, batting away pucks as if they’re gnats buzzing around the crease during his first two games. But Norway was able to chip away a bit, getting four in Slovakia’s 8-4 victory. Gajan’s save percentage is still a sparkling .934 and he’s been once again at his best. It’s what prompted the Blackhawks to use their 35th overall pick in 2023 on him.

Now after seeing a tournament that has featured two of Chicago’s value picks standing tall on the international stage, they’re about to go head-to-head.

Yes, Sam Rinzel, Oliver Moore and Gavin Hayes will suit up for the Red, White, and Blue, too. Martin Misiak will be skating on the other side, too.

But most eyes will be on Nazar and Gajan, the two who Chicago fans have fixated on in this tournament.

It should make for a good show–and future–for the Blackhawks prospects.
