Blackhawks Daily: Building Through Trades; Rangers Take the Lead

APRIL 14: Frank Nazar #91 of the Chicago Blackhawks during the second period against the Carolina Hurricanes at the United Center on April 14, 2024 in Chicago, Illinois.

The big news for the Chicago Blackhawks was Kyle Davidson orchestrating a trade that bumped them up in both the first and second round.

Now it’s a matter of what to do with that capital. CHN took a deep dive at the 2014-2022 NHL Drafts with the selections made from #18 to the end of the first round. The results yield some interesting looks at big name players drafted in that range (just 2% of all the picks) and how you’re likelier to get a contributing role player rather than a game breaker. Whereas they made deals to grab Kevin Korchinski and Frank Nazar back in 2022, both were considered talents to buoy a rebuilding roster. Both were also taken several slots higher.

If the Blackhawks want to be playing deeper into the postseason sooner rather than later, maybe using that pick to get a proven, impact player could make that happen. It seems the quicker–and likely stronger way to fill the roster back into a contending status.

Speaking of the playoffs: The Western Conference Finals continued on Saturday night. The Dallas Stars, after going down in overtime of game one, came into this one trailing the series 1-0. They also earned a big 3-1 win. They went up 1-0 early in the first period but the Oilers got it tied up quickly after. After no scoring in the second, each team needed a new hero in the third. That hero turned out to be Mason Marchment of the Dallas Stars. Esa Lindell added an empty-netter and that is how they reached that 3-1 final score.

The series is all knotted up at 1-1. They will now shift to Edmonton where each team will look to get out in front in the series. Game 3 is going to be a big factor in the overall series.

The Florida Panthers took a 1-0 lead over the New York Rangers in the first period but they were then trailing 4-2 going into the third period. They roared back to get it tied and forced overtime.  In overtime, Alexander Wennberg scored the game-winner for the Rangers. They now have a 2-1 series lead. It was a great (and stunning) win for the Rangers down in Sunrise.

Blackhawks In Case You Missed It

The Chicago Blackhawks made a very interesting trade involving draft picks.

Connor Bedard is a generational superstar and the Chicago Blackhawks must find a way to build a winner around him.

Lukas Reichel has been more of a story at Worlds than Connor Bedard which is wild to hear.
