Blackhawks Daily: Offer Sheet Time; Off-Season Grades

Published

on

Throughout the rest of the summer, you might hear a few rumors about offer sheets in the NHL. Most NHL teams never even consider the possibility. The biggest reason is the chance you burn bridges with fellow GMs across the league.

The most recent example of that petty thinking is the most recent successful offer sheet. The Montreal Canadiens, at first, tried to claim Carolina Hurricanes forward Sebastian Aho. The Canes matched it but felt the need to have revenge in their blood.

Carolina ended up offer sheeting Habs forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi. The Habs let him walk in favor of the compensation. The funny thing is that Carolina had to wildly overpay for him both with compensation and salary. From there, Kotkaniemi has been an okay player but hardly worth all of that.

Is there a single RFA currently worth all of that risk/trouble? Maybe Jeremy Swayman of the Boston Bruins is good enough of a goalie to think about but the Bruins can’t afford to let him go after trading Linus Ullmark.

Other candidates for an offer sheet include Seth Jarvis, Moritz Seider, and Lucas Raymond among others. Are teams willing to make the move? Only time will tell but don’t count on it.

Just in case any Blackhawks fans were wondering, Chicago is eligible to make an offer sheet for any player. They have the compensation needed for every tier of RFA.

Meanwhile, in addition to all of that, the NHL world is evaluating itself after the season now that the draft and free agency are (mostly) over. Which prospects are fun to watch and who gets the best grades?
