Blackhawks Daily: Konecny Extends In Philly; Laine’s Price Changed

On Thursday, we learned about an extension that took place in Philly. Instead of trading him away, the Philadelphia Flyers decided to extend Travis Konecny.
In 2023-24, Konecny led the Flyers in goals (33), assists (35), and points (68). He is getting 8 years at $8.75 million per year against the cap. It’s a hefty price for a 27-year-old winger but that’s the market that has been set over the last handful of years.
The Flyers have to hope that he continues to score goals at a high clip while some of the younger talent around him starts to filter in. He could be a great leader on this up-and-coming team but the Flyers are certainly paying for it.
Elsewhere in the NHL, the Columbus Blue Jackets and Patrik Laine seem to be at odds. It doesn’t feel like he will be playing for them in 2024-25. The price on him seems to be shifting too. You can’t help but wonder if the Chicago Blackhawks will try.
Kyle Davidson could also relate his team to both of these situations. With a center like Connor Bedard, you always want to find elite wingers for him to play with.
If they want a high-end one like Konecny, it is going to cost a lot of money. If they want someone like Laine, they are going to have to give up assets. Either way, it is not a perfect science when making these decisions.
