Monday was randomly a big news day in the NHL. Despite it being the dog days of summer, some things were notable around the league. A few players locked themselves into contracts with their clubs.

Let’s start with the Chicago Blackhawks. They re-signed Isaak Phillips to a one-year two-way contract with a cap hit of $775K. They also got Louis Crevier on a $775K cap hit for one year (two-way).

Neither of these guys are locks to make the roster but they will sure be a part of the festivities during training camp and the preseason. They will likely see a lot of time with the Rockford Ice Hogs. If they are lucky, they may get some NHL ice depending on how the season goes.

Around the league, a few other signings were made as well. For one, the Minnesota Wild locked in their long-term number-one defenseman. Brock Faber, who was the runner-up to Connor Bedard in the Calder Trophy race, signed an eight-year extension worth $8.5 million per year. This is a great deal for both Faber and the Wild as he may prove to be on a discount over time.

Also, despite a lot of trade rumors, the Carolina Hurricanes extended Martin Necas. He got $13 million over two years with an AAV of $6.5 million against the salary cap. This is a lot of money but not much long-term commitment so we’ll see how it plays out for him. He’s betting on himself to go out there and become a star so he can earn even more.

At Chicago Hockey Now, we are ranking the prospects in the Chicago Blackhawks system. There is a top ten with a few honorable mentions being revealed as the week goes on. So far, it looks like this:
