Christian Fischer celebrates after scoring a goal to put the Detroit Red Wings up 1-0 over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sept. 27, 2024.

The Chicago Blackhawks lost to the Detroit Red Wings on Friday night during the second game of the preseason.

Chicago had very little going during the game. With tonight’s lineup full of young players trying to stand out, it wasn’t the best showing for the Hawks. Arvid Soderblom had a busy night, facing 31 shots on goal in the Blackhawks loss to the Wings.

Soderblom gave up two goals on the night, including a goal by Christian Fischer and a power play goal by Vladimir Tarasenko.

The Red Wings led the Hawks in most categories during the night, leading in shots on goal faceoffs and the special teams battle.

The Blackhawks line of Gavin Hayes, Cole Guttman and Colton Dach stood out the most tonight. That unit was producing more than any other line, with a corsi for percentage of 66.67 percent at five on five per natural stat trick.

The Hawks were outplayed tonight, from start to finish Detroit looked like a team trying to impress infront of the home crowd. Luckily Richardson and company won’t have to wait long to get back in action. Chicago will be playing in St. Louis on Saturday.

Blackhawks were not the only Chicago loss in Detroit tonight.

The Blackhawks weren’t the only team to lose in Detroit on Friday. The Chicago White Sox also lost to the Detroit Tigers, setting the record for the most losses in a season in the modern era, a span that dates to 1900. White Sox fans have been packing Guaranteed Rate Field the last few days to witness the historic loss – it was held off for an extra few days.

The White Sox loss does offer an opportunity to look at the Hawks. Last season, the Blackhawks record of 23-53-6 was actually the most losses in a single season by the team. However, it was not the team’s worst record. In 1927-28, the Chicago Black Hawks finished the season 7-34-3 with just 17 points and a .193 point percentage. While that was bad, in 1953-54 the team finished 12-51-7.

The worst record in NHL history belongs to the 1974-75 Washington Capitals. Washington went 8-67-5 registering just 21 points in 80 games, finishing with a point percentage of .131. Of the teams in the top 20 spots for the worst records in NHL history the 1999-20 Atlanta Thrashers are the most recent team near the top with a record of 14-57-7.

The Blackhawks are 0-2-0 to kick off the preseason. Their next game is tomorrow night in St. Louis.
