The Chicago Blackhawks (13-13-6) kick off a three-game road trip in Canada on Tuesday with an Original Six matchup against the Toronto Maple Leafs (14-12-5) at Scotiabank Arena.

It’s the second and final meeting of the 2025-26 season between the two teams, with the Blackhawks winning the first game 3-2 at the United Center on Nov. 15. Ryan Greene and Teuvo Teravainen each scored once, while Colton Dach recorded his first career NHL game-winning goal. Spencer Knight also stopped 31 of 33 shots faced to earn the victory in net.

Last time out, the Blackhawks were shutout for the third time in their last 11 games, falling 4-0 to the Detroit Red Wings at the United Center on Saturday. It was the first game of the season without Connor Bedard, and the offense unsurprisingly struggled. John Gibson stopped all 29 shots faced to blank the Blackhawks. Chicago has just six goals scored in the last five games.

With a 3-5-2 record in the past 10 games, the Blackhawks are now three points back of a playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Maple Leafs are coming off a 6-3 home loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night. Easton Cowan, Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and Steven Lorentz were responsible for the Leafs’ three goals against Edmonton. Toronto also dropped its previous game, 3-2, to the San Jose Sharks in overtime at Scotiabank Arena.

Despite two consecutive losses, the Maple Leafs are 3-1-2 in their first six games of December. However, they are still the third-last in the Eastern Conference standings with just 33 points through 31 games. Toronto is currently five points back of a playoff spot and have five teams ahead of them.

Here’s everything to note before the puck drops at 6:00 p.m. CT in Toronto.

Blackhawks Regular Season Notes (Last Five Games)

  • In one of the few forgettable performances so far this season, the Blackhawks were steamrolled 6-0 by the Los Angeles Kings in the second matchup in three days. The game was close through 20 minutes, but the Blackhawks surrendered six unanswered goals in the final two periods.
  • For the second time in as many nights, the Blackhawks were on the wrong end of a one-sided affair, getting throttled 7-1 by the Anaheim Ducks. What a disastrous way to end the West Coast road trip.
  • Following two disastrous defeats, the Blackhawks bounced back with arguably the top team performance of the season in a 3-0 shutout win over the Rangers. Connor Bedard tallied two points, while Spencer Knight stopped all 21 shots faced.
  • Well, that was a nightmare. Not only did the Blackhawks lose 3-2 to the rival St. Louis Blues, but star forward Connor Bedard suffered an injury in the final second of the game. Wonderful.
  • Life without Connor Bedard isn’t so easy. In the first game without Bedard this season, the Blackhawks were shutout 4-0 by the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. Alex DeBrincat and Patrick Kane combined for three of the four Red Wings’ goals in their returns to the United Center.

Artyom Levshunov skated as an extra during the Blackhawks morning skate on Tuesday, likely signaling that he’ll be a healthy scratch against the Maple Leafs. Levshunov was late to the team’s practice on Monday at Fifth Third Arena, and he looks like he’ll be punished for it by missing Tuesday’s game.

Ethan Del Mastro, who was recalled from the AHL on Monday, is set to appear in his second NHL game of the season.

The Blackhawks are expected to roll with the same forward lines as Saturday against the Detroit Red Wings. Nick Lardis will play in his 2nd career NHL game and will skate with fellow rookies Oliver Moore and Ryan Greene on the third line. Tyler Bertuzzi and Andre Burakovsky remain on the top line with Frank Nazar.

Captain Nick Foligno traveled with the team for the three-game road trip but still remains on injured reserve. There’s a chance Foligno returns to the lineup on Thursday in Montreal or Saturday in Ottawa.

Knight will make his 23rd start of the season in net for the Blackhawks on Tuesday. The 24-year-old netminder stopped 23 of 26 shots faced in a 3-2 loss to the St. Louis Blues in his most recent outing on Friday. Knight is 2-1-0 with a 3.07 GAA and .897 Sv% in three career starts against Toronto.
