Jack’s Daily: Blackhawks Still Unbeaten in New Year; RIP Mr. Goalie

Published

on

The winning streak has now reached four games for the Chicago Blackhawks after throttling the rival St. Louis Blues 7-3 on Wednesday night. Let’s hope the Bears do the same to their long-standing rival, the Green Bay Packers, on Saturday night at Soldier Field. Anyone else starting to get butterflies? Asking for a friend.

Seven different skaters scored a goal in the win, while 13 players earned at least one point. It was arguably the best team win of the season for the Blackhawks, but it wouldn’t have been possible without some clutch special teams play in the early going.

More in the links for the recap and highlights from a late-night beatdown over the Blues, as the Blackhawks move to 4-0-0 since the start of the New Year.

Also in Blackhawks news, the franchise and its fans took another tough blow just before puck drop against St. Louis. After Bob Pulford passed away on Monday, Hockey Hall of Famer Glenn Hall, nicknamed Mr. Goalie, died at 94 on Wednesday. Hall spent 10 of his 18 NHL seasons in Chicago, where he backstopped the team to the Stanley Cup in 1961. He also holds one of the most iconic records in all of professional sports.

Around the league, Macklin Celebrini rallied the Sharks to a comeback win, news on the 2027 Winter Classic, and what’s next for the slumping Devils.

All that & more in the Daily!

Chicago Blackhawks Recap, News & Tidbits

Chicago Hockey Now: After falling behind 1-0 early, the Blackhawks immediately committed a pair of penalties as part of a disastrous first five minutes. But some excellent special teams play, both by the penalty kill and power play, pulled the team out of an early bind. Chicago then scored seven of the next eight goals as part of the blowout win over the Blues.

More CHN: Rest in peace, Mr. Goalie. Glenn Hall, a three-time Vezina Trophy winner and recipient of the Conn Smyth Trophy in 1968, passed away in a Stony Plain, Alberta, hospital on Wednesday. He was 94. One of the best goaltenders in NHL history, Hall holds a forever-unbeatable streak of 502 consecutive games played — and finished! All without wearing a goalie mask.

More CHN: Early on Thursday morning, Blackhawks prospect Adam Gajan was one of three goaltenders named to Slovakia’s Olympic roster. The 2023 second-round pick has been one of the best netminders in all of college hockey this year with the University of Minnesota-Duluth.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

The Athletic: Trade activity is starting to pick up around the NHL. Here’s Chris Johnston’s trade board 3.0 from this morning, which includes notables like Steven Stamkos, Alex Tuch, and Artemi Panarin.

Sportsnet: From another source, Nick Kypreos, here are what some teams could be thinking with the 2026 NHL Trade Deadline looming.

New Jersey Hockey Now: When both Tom Fitzgerald and Sheldon Keefe were at the Prudential Center on Wednesday for practice, the New Jersey Devils ownership made their choice. So what’s left to do for the slumping squad? James Nichols from NJHN writes that the Devils must shake up the core.

San Jose Hockey Now: What can’t this kid do? Down by a goal late in the third period, Macklin Celebrini tied the game to force overtime. Celebrini then tallied the primary assist on the San Jose Sharks‘ overtime winner as part of a three-point night.

NHL.com: The Winter Classic is coming to Utah. While there isn’t a date set, the 2027 Winter Classic will be played between the Colorado Avalanche and Utah Mammoth at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City, which is the home of Utah Utes football.

Forever Blueshirts: The playoff picture in the Eastern Conference remains cluttered, but the New York Rangers‘ chances of playing postseason hockey have taken a major hit. Without Igor Shesterkin and Adam Fox, both expected to miss extended periods with an injury, what’s next for the Rangers?
