WATCH: Toews Receives LOUD Welcome Home Ovation From Blackhawks Fans
When Jonathan Toews announced his return to the NHL and eventually signed with his hometown Winnipeg Jets, many fans of the Chicago Blackhawks instantly wondered when ‘Captain Serious’ would make his first trip back to the United Center.
Monday night was that date, as the Jets came into Chicago for the second of four meetings between the two Central Division foes this season. Ahead of the matchup, Toews spoke with the media following the morning skate to discuss his expectations for the game. He also took time to mention how grateful he is to have been part of the Blackhawks’ family for 16 seasons — and everything he accomplished along the journey.
During the first TV timeout in Monday’s matchup between the Blackhawks and Jets, Toews received a video tribute that was shown on the Jumbotron, highlighting his best memories and top moments with the organization that selected him third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft. Per usual, the Blackhawks crushed Toews’ tribute.
But what really made the moment extraordinary was the fans in attendance to witness the three-time Stanley Cup champion’s first trip back to the Windy City. For nearly three minutes, the fans did not stop cheering as Toews skated around the ice, looking almost in disbelief at the scene on hand. He had to take a few extra laps, and had he not returned to the bench, the ovation would have continued. What a special, special scene it was.
Regardless of who he plays for now, Toews will always be beloved by the Blackhawks faithful for everything he did for his teammates, the franchise, and this city. They made that abundantly clear on Monday night.
Toews mentioned on Monday morning how when the Blackhawks drafted him, he was told that Chicago is a great city, and once the team gets going, it would be an excellent place to play. The great Hawks’ fans displayed precisely why Chicago is such a revered sports town.
Welcome home, Tazer.
