CHN Transactions & Trade Rumors Tracker: DeBrincat Latest

Updated 6/21 1:45 pm: The latest on DeBrincat and Hellebuyck: Chicago Hockey Now will keep a running thread of all of the big action as a one stop shop for trades, signings, and trade rumors.

It’s already begun with a re-signing of Cole Caufield, and the Ivan Provorov trade. This will be a collection of all of those deals, and if there could be a potential impact on or with the Blackhawks. The Hockey Now tracker is starting at the beginning of June. While the Stanley Cup Final is still going on, here’s a look at the offseason transactions for the rest of the league so far.

June 20 – Latest on DeBrincat, Hellebuyck 

Analysis: It’s all set that DeBrincat is going somewhere, with the hottest speculation being Detroit. ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski thinks it would take a first, second and prospect Carter Mazur to pry DeBrincat out of Ottawa but that seems a little much. For someone who isn’t going to re-sign anyway, Ottawa’s leverage is not as effective as it could be. Beyond that as Wyshynski points out, Ottawa doesn’t pick until the fourth round, which might only cause other teams to offer a take it or leave it approach.

Hellebuyck, meanwhile, in an unrestricted free agent following the 2023-24 season. In the same article, Wyshynski has the 30-year-old netminder going to Los Angeles for a pair of draft picks (2nd and 3rd) along with a young player and roster player. Calling it a steep price to pay, it would have to be big to get a goalie of his stature.

As provided in today’s Daily, New Jersey has been linked to Hellebuyck as well but it goes against GM Tom Fitzgerald’s words that goaltending wasn’t an immediate concern.

June 15 – Colorado Acquires Fredrik Olofsson from Dallas for future considerations

Analysis: A simple deal that saw Dallas moving an expiring contract they weren’t going to pick up. Olofsson inked a one-year deal with the Avalanche following the trade.

June 15 – New Jersey Devils Re-Sign Jesper Bratt to 8-Year, $63M Extension

Analysis: A good value for a player who is one of the main pieces for a team as one of the favorites to compete for the Stanley Cup next season. Bratt played in all 82 games and had 73 points (31-42). In 12 playoff games, he had six points (1-5). The cap hit works out to $7.875M and locks up the core of Bratt and Jack Hughes at a clip of 19% of total cap space. (Via CapFriendly)

June 9 – New Jersey Devils trade Damon Severson to Columbus for a 2023 third-round pick

Analysis: Columbus is certainly beefing up its blue line. Days from acquiring Ivan Provorov from Philadelphia, the Blue Jackets snag Severson from New Jersey for a third-round pick, which initially belonged to Calgary. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that it was a sign and trade, with Severson getting an eight-year deal with a $6.25M cap hit.

June 9 – Pierre-Luc Dubois Could Be Dealt from Winnipeg (Trade Rumors)

Analysis: Dubois wouldn’t re-sign for the long term and now Winnipeg is stuck trying to trade him away. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that Dubois won’t even sign a bridge deal which gives him and any team trading far more leverage. It will be quite the tightrope act for the Jets in gathering any sort of fair compensation knowing Dubois already has a foot outside of Winnipeg. LeBrun said that Winnipeg could very well hold onto him and peddle him away at the trade deadline. But Dubois certainly holds the cards.

June 8 – Ottawa Seeking Trade Partners for Alex DeBrincat; DeBrincat submits trade list (Trade Rumors)

Analysis: Already covered extensively here at Chicago Hockey Now, it is likelier that DeBrincat heads to a contender or a team looking to make the next big jump out of a rebuild. It’s also unlikely that general manager Kyle Davidson brings back a player from the past if one is to follow his lead with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews. If they’re not returning, why would he give up assets to bring DeBrincat back, who he dealt at the draft last year? Meanwhile, DeBrincat has reportedly submitted his trade list for where he would like to go.

June 7 – Chicago Blackhawks re-sign Andreas Athanasiou to 2-Year, $8.5M Deal

Analysis: A low risk signing for both sides with the Blackhawks being able to pay a bit more since they’re getting to the cap floor and have no plans on rushing their way through the rebuild. For Athanasiou, he gets a nice raise and a chance to play as top six forward, potentially on a line with Connor Bedard.

June 7 – Carter Hart Rumors Heat Up; Potentially 2 First-Round Picks Wanted? (Trade Rumors)

San Jose Now’s Sheng Peng reports that rumors out of Philadelphia are that new general manager Danny Briere is trying to grab two first-round picks for netminder Carter Hart, who is purportedly being shopped. If the Sharks are indeed interested, that’s a steep price.

June 7 – Los Angeles Kings re-sign UFA Vladislav Gavrikov to 2-Year, $11.75M Deal

Analysis: Gavrikov would have hit free agency on July 1, but instead is re-upped for two seasons. Gavrikov averaged just under 22 minutes a night on the ice, and chipped in 19 points (3-16) in 72 games.

June 6 – The Philadelphia Flyers Trade Ivan Provorov to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a 2023 First-Round Pick (#22), 2024 Second-Round Pick (LA), Contingent Second-Round Pick (CBJ), Heige Grans, Cal Petersen, and Sean Walker. Los Angeles retains 30% of the Provorov contract and acquires Kevin Connauton and Hayden Hodgson

Analysis:  It appears the Philadelphia Flyers are now in full rebuild mode. The trade is a massive one that brings in a blue line presence for Columbus and an absolute haul for the Flyers. Philly Hockey Now’s Chuck Bausman writes that the trade was a necessary one for a player who looks to be trending down both on and off the ice.

June 5 – Cole Caufield Signs an 8-year, $62.8M Extension with Montreal

Analysis: Caufield’s eight-year deal locks him in at a reasonable price for a team that is trying to get out of rebuild mode and back into a playoff hunt. In the midst of all of this, rumors are flying that Carter Hart could be heading to Montreal next.
