Published

on

The Chicago Blackhawks (15-43-4) head to the Desert to take on the Arizona Coyotes (25-31-5). Puck drop is another later one at 8pm.

Previously on Blackhawks Hockey:

The Blackhawks weren’t much of a matchup against the Colorado Avalanche (again), falling in another 5-0 loss which made it back-to-back shutouts in the final two meetings between both teams.

Scouting the Opponent & Miscellaneous Musings

The title of today’s preview comes from the Mad Men episode where an irate Pete Campbell lets colleague Bob Benson know that things are indeed not going well for him. It comes to mind because when talking to a friend of the same name today, he asked me to surmise the Blackhawks stretch. I could only laugh as the same line danced into my mind, one of the serendipitous moments where life imitates the arts. Or at least can borrow from a terrific television show.

But it hasn’t been great for the Blackhawks, not for the last seven games, not for the season, and especially not the last three games. They’ve been outscored 15-2. The season still has 20 games to go and it’s been a stretch of time where the team just looked fatigued and frustrated by all of the losing.

In short, it’s not great. Hope is on the horizon once the Draft Lottery arrives, and then the Blackhawks can begin building around the young talent they’re growing. But it’s a locker room with 23 players who aren’t looking at that. It’s personal–and that should matter for something while fans grow more flustered watching the last month of Blackhawks hockey.

Chicago has gone 4-18-3 since the calendar turned over to 2024. In the last 15 games? Just one win. So no, it’s not great but tonight features a Coyotes team holding players out because of potential trades (Jason Dumba) and who have also not been at their best lately. The last time they played Arizona? An 8-1 drubbing on October 30th.

The Blackhawks have a better chance tonight than they did 24 hours ago. Will they finally notch a win putting the seven-game losing skid to bed?
