2 Thoughts After Four Powerplay Goals Snap Blackhawks Skid

Published

on

For a team that could barely score on the man advantage, the Blackhawks made up for it in one full swoop. Chicago scored four power play goals in Arizona, snapping a 22-game road losing streak along with a seven-game skid in a 5-2 victory Tuesday night.

Fatigue and frustration wasn’t a factor. Instead, it looked like catharsis for a team that hasn’t had much go their way this season. Seth Jones had two goals, including an empty netter which finally got him beyond just one for the season.

Arvid Soderblom had  37 saves in his first victory since November 24th. A pair of thoughts for a team that broke out in a big way.

Powerplay Powers Blackhawks To Victory

The Hawks had just four powerplay goals total in January and again in February. Talk about March coming in like a lion on the man advantage.

Chicago earned markers from Jones, Nick Foligno, Jason Dickinson, and Philipp Kurashev, the latter an absolute bullet that felt like the exclamation point on the win. Arizona fought back a couple times to tie, but would almost immediately go back to the penalty box. Chicago wouldn’t miss, burying every chance but one.

More impressive were some of the passes that set goals up. Connor Bedard had a pair of assists, with one a perfect bank off Foligno’s stick that went into the net. Kevin Korchinski added one of his own, finding Dickinson in the slot who buried it into an open net with Connor Ingram far out of position.

Soderblom Finally Posts a Win

Soderblom couldn’t find a win in over three months but finally notched one thanks to the Blackhawks goal explosion. Last season, the netminder also went through long stretches without wins, and this season was just about on par. He had 14 appearances (13 starts) where he was. unable to record the victory, sometimes a victim of a lack of goal support.

The Blackhawks more than made up for that Tuesday night with the four-goal barrage.

One More For the Road

The four goals the Blackhawks scored are the most in a game since a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders back on January 19th. That was a stretch of 16 games scoring three or less, which saw just one victory in that span.

Arizona will visit Chicago on Sunday at 5pm. The Blackhawks will go to Washington on Saturday, maybe lighter or carrying a new player following the trade deadline on Friday.
