Jack’s Daily: Weekend Sweep, Nazar Dominates, Stolarz Extension

It’s an extra-special Victory Monday in Chicago, as the Blackhawks, Bears, Cubs, and White Sox all earned a victory to close out the weekend! The Blackhawks defeated the Minnesota Wild 4-1 on Sunday for their second road preseason win in as many days. Frank Nazar led the way with a dominant performance, while Connor Bedard, Tyler Bertuzzi, and Drew Commesso also had standout showings. Also in Blackhawks news, the training camp roster is now down to 38 players after the second and third waves of cuts over the weekend. The start of the 2025-26 regular season is only eight days away, so the roster will continue to be trimmed down this week.
Around the league, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Anthony Stolarz agreed to an extension, Mason McTavish FINALLY signed with Anaheim, and Marc-Andre Fleury made one final appearance with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Chicago Hockey Now: Jeff Blashill iced his projected top-six forward group for the first time during the preseason against the Wild. Both the first and second lines were spectacular in the 4-1 win, as Nazar tallied a hat trick, Bertuzzi had two helpers, and Bedard recorded a highlight-reel primary assist. More CHN: With most of the NHL group playing on Sunday, the Blackhawks roster on Saturday against the St. Louis Blues was filled with mostly AHLers and bubble players. Even though they were outmatched, the Blackhawks scored four unanswered goals in the third period to claw back from an early 2-0 deficit.
More CHN: ICYMI, the Blackhawks made their second and third rounds of training camp cuts over the weekend, trimming down the roster to 38 players.
Congrats to Blackhawks 2025 first-round pick (No. 3 overall) Anton Frondell for scoring his first career SHL goal for Djurgarden over the weekend! Frondell now has three points (1G, 2A) through the opening six games this season.
Over in Russia, Roman Kantserov’s heater in the KHL continued over the weekend. Kantserov potted his fourth goal of the season and now has eight points through nine games for Metallurg Magnitogorsk.
It didn’t take long for Marek Vanacker to make an impact after being returned to the OHL with Brantford. Vanacker scored a goal in his season debut for the Bulldogs in a 7-2 win.

The Athletic: After an incredible first season with the team, the Toronto Maple Leafs agreed to a four-year extension with goaltender Anthony Stolarz on Sunday. The 31-year-old netminder went 21-8-3 with a 2.14 GAA, .926 Sv%, and four shutouts in 34 starts with the team in 2024-25.
NHLdotcom: In the middle of the first intermission on Saturday while facing the Blackhawks, the St. Louis Blues announced that Cam Fowler signed a new three-year contract extension. The 33-year-old defenseman is entering the final year of his current deal and is now inked through 2028-29.
More NHLdotcom: ICYMI, the Mason McTavish saga finally concluded this weekend. McTavish and the Ducks finally reached a new deal — six years with a $7 million cap hit.
Pittsburgh Hockey Now: Donning the Black & Gold pads for one last ride, Marc-Andre Fleury played the third period of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ preseason game on Saturday night, and he fared well! Fleury stopped all eight shots that he faced in the team’s 4-1 win over Columbus.
New Jersey Hockey Now: A report surfaced over the weekend that the New Jersey Devils and goaltender Jacob Markstrom are working towards a new contract. Here’s the deal that Markstrom was reportedly offered by the Devils recently.
Florida Hockey Now: No Aleksander Barkov for the entire season. Matthew Tkachuk is set to miss at least a few months. Who will step up for the Florida Panthers?
