A Different Kind of Heartbreaker: Kane Sinks Blackhawks in OT
Patrick Kane does what he did for so many years in Chicago–sealing the game with an overtime winner
CHICAGO – Patrick Kane had a different type of heartbreaker with the Chicago Blackhawks. This time, it was at their expense.
Kane buried the overtime winner in a 3-2 Red Wings victory in a game that the Blackhawks played so well in from the opening faceoff.
“I was behind the play there in overtime and saw we had the puck so tried to take off,” Kane said. “Good feeling getting that breakaway. I think you know the feeling of the moment when you get that puck, but just tried to stick with what I wanted to do. Luckily enough, saw it go in.”
On Chris Chelios night, it was Kane who finished the script to a game that in overtime, felt destined to occur, especially after the tribute Kane received after the first TV timeout.
The Red Wings opened up the scoring with a Daniel Sprong goal in the dying seconds of the first period. But the Blackhawks answered back with tallies from MacKenzie Entwistle and then Nick Foligno on the man advantage. Foligno was parked low, screening James Reimer, who couldn’t pick up Bedard’s shot from the point. It got just enough of Foligno, trickled through Reimer and put the Hawks up 2-1.
The Hawks outshot the Red Wings heavily, and were physical as well, with even Bedard putting a hit on Kane in the third.

But the Red Wings would even things up on a goal by another Blackhawks star, Alex DeBrincat. He banked the puck off Petr Mrazek, and the game was suddenly tied with but a few minutes to go in the third.
Kane would finish things off in overtime after another the Blackhawks had a chance, and his celebration was one that, along with the reception he received, will live long in fans’ memories.
