Blackhawks Daily: Ovechkin Has 30 And Capitals Are Winning

Published

on

The Chicago Blackhawks had a rare Tuesday off day, but the rest of the NHL was jam packed. By now, you know about the crazy race that is taking place in the Eastern Conference. One of the teams involved is the Washington Capitals who won their game 2-1 over the Detroit Red Wings who they are battling with in the Wild Card standings.

The game-winning goal was scored by none other than Alexander Ovechkin. This was a historic goal for Ovechkin in more ways than one. First of all, this was the 852nd goal in the career of Ovechkin. He needs 42 more to tie the mark set by Wayne Gretzky and 43 to break it. There is a good chance he will do it next year if he gets off to a good start.

In addition to that, this was the 30th goal of the season for Alexander Ovechkin which is historic in its own right. He became the first player in NHL history to score 30 goals in a season 18 times.

It is remarkable how great he has been at scoring goals and it doesn’t appear that he is anywhere near being done. Don’t expect him to stop at 895 when he breaks Gretzky’s record.

With the win, Washington jumped Detroit to be in the final Wild Card spot for now. The other teams around them are going to keep fighting for it over the final few games. Not only is Ovechkin chasing history, he is fighting for his spot in the postseason.

Blackhawks In Case You Missed It

  • Former Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville has spoken for the first time in a while on everything about his time with the Blackhawks–which includes his misteps in handling the assualt of Kyle Beach.
  • Cole Guttman is going to miss some time with the Rockford Ice Hogs due to injury. This is bad news right before the playoffs are about to begin.
  • Connor Bedard certainly deserves to be the Calder Trophy winner despite how well Brock Faber has played this season.

Hockey Now Playoff Focus

  • Pittsburgh Hockey Now: The Pittsburgh Penguins didn’t have the best night in terms of the out-of-town scoreboard.
  • Boston Hockey Now: The Boston Bruins didn’t have a good night against the Carolina Hurricanes. This is exactly how they can’t play in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
  • Philly Hockey Now: The Philadelphia Flyers dropped the ball against the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night. They wasted a great opportunity to be a playoff team this year.
  • New Jersey Hockey Now: On the same day that the New Jersey Devils announced that Jack Hughes would miss the rest of the season due to shoulder surgery, they were eliminated from postseason contention.
