Chicago Blackhawks, Jason Dickinson

The Chicago Blackhawks practiced in Seattle on Sunday afternoon ahead of their matchup with the Kraken, where they will try to pick up the first win of their long six-game road trip. The Blackhawks could be without shutdown defensive forward Jason Dickinson for a second consecutive game on Monday, as he was absent from the practice session at Climate Pledge Arena. Make sure to check out my preview of the contest later today for Dickinson’s official status against the Kraken.

Also in Blackhawks news, two prospects continued their red-hot scoring streaks and are top-10 point getters in their respective leagues. More in the links for the highlights from a few Blackhawks prospects on Sunday.

Around the league, Matthew Schaefer became the youngest NHL defenseman ever to record a two-goal game, Sam Dickinson showed why he’s sticking around in San Jose, and the Nashville Predators are already garnering significant trade interest.

All that & more in the Daily!

Chicago Blackhawks Recap, News & Tidbits

Chicago Hockey Now: ICYMI, the Blackhawks put up a valiant effort, but Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl proved to be too much to handle for the young defense. Chicago fell 3-2 in overtime to earn the first point of their road trip, as McDavid and Draisaitl factored into all three of the Edmonton Oilers’ goals. Here are the highlights, stats, and takeaways from the Blackhawks‘ second consecutive loss.

During the Blackhawks’ practice in Seattle on Sunday, Jason Dickinson remained absent with a shoulder injury. It seems unlikely that he’ll play against the Kraken, but make sure to check out my Game Preview to see if Dickinson miraculously returns for the morning skate. Here were Chicago’s lines and pairings during their practice in Seattle.

In Blackhawks prospects news, it’s starting to become a situation where it would be more surprising if Marek Vanacker DIDN’T find the back of the net. Vanacker potted his OHL-leading 15th goal of the season in just his 14th game in the Brantford Bulldogs’ win over Saginaw on Sunday. The 2024 first-round pick is also ninth in the league with 22 points. He and Jake O’Brien are going nuts early on this year for the Bulldogs.

Out in the WHL, Nathan Behm also kept up his recent scoring streak on Sunday, as he buried a pair of goals to help the Kamloops Blazers cruise to a 6-2 win. Behm now has 10 goals on the season and is tied for fourth in the WHL with 24 points.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

NHLdotcom: After being stretchered off the ice and taken to a local hospital, Chris Tanev was discharged and returned home to Toronto on Sunday morning. It’s great to see a positive update after a scary situation on Saturday. The Maple Leafs placed Tanev on injured reserve but didn’t mention a specific injury tag or a timeline for his return.

Daily Hive: The Vancouver Canucks are already banged up, and the Nashville Predators are off to another sluggish start. The Athletic’s Rick Dhaliwal, on his Donnie and Dhali podcast, recently mentioned that the Canucks inquired about Steven Stamkos’ availability with the Predators. Stamkos has just three points in 13 games this season, and he also has a full no-movement clause in his contract. He isn’t going anywhere… unless he wants to.

AP News: When you break a record that Bobby Orr held, you know you’re doing something right. That’s precisely what Matthew Schaefer did on Sunday, as he became the youngest defenseman in NHL history to score two goals in a single game, passing Orr. His second came with just over a minute remaining in regulation, which spurred the Islanders to an incredible comeback 3-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets.

San Jose Hockey Now: Sam Dickinson played in his 10th NHL game of the season on Sunday, effectively kicking in the first year of his entry-level contract. He’ll be sticking around with the San Jose Sharks, and he fittingly scored his first NHL goal in the game that sealed his fate for the near future.

Philly Hockey Now: The Philadelphia Flyers suffered their second straight loss to wrap up a long homestand, as they remain reluctant to shoot the puck. William James from PHN breaks down the Flyers’ core issues from their 2-1 loss to the Calgary Flames.

New Jersey Hockey Now: After an encouraging win over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday, the New Jersey Devils weren’t as sharp in the second half of their weekend back-to-back.
