The Daily: Trade Rumors During the Offseason Slowdown

Published

on

Outside of arbitration and the occasional signings sprinkled throughout, it’s relatively quiet until camps and then the preseason kicks off. But there are still trade rumors that keep fans on their toes.

Alex DeBrincat’s trade finally came to be and there are still some floating around. Buffalo has its own trade rumors, but it’s more as to how a potential Carolina acquiring Erik Karlsson deal would affect the Sabres roster.

Boston’s case is perhaps the more interesting one, as Boston Hockey Now’s Jimmy Murphy wonders if a deal will come to be for a salary dump. But just don’t speculate too much with general manager Don Sweeney.

““I didn’t start any rumors. So, you want to ask me where they came from?” Sweeney replied, seemingly exasperated when asked about the Matt Grzlecyk trade rumors on July 1. “You want to look in the mirror? Maybe you guys started them, you know, is it hypothetical that they’re having conversations about players, our lineup? No. It’s a fact, and there’s no question that I’m never going to discuss whether or not a team has called me. That’s just the job. It doesn’t matter who it is. That’s disrespectful to a player, from my point of view, being a former player.”

Sweeney spoke some more but this reveals his aggravation. Trade rumors are part of the game, and have been prior to the advent of the internet, where rumors can ignite from the smallest of stories. But as it often goes, sometimes where there’s smoke, there’s fire.
