Blackhawks Game #60: Trying to Avoid Another Avalanche of Losses

The Chicago Blackhawks (15-40-4) will host the Colorado Avalanche (36-19-5) tonight in a nationally televised game on ESPN. Puck drop is set for 8pm.

The Patrick Kane return game was everything and more–at least in terms of excitement. The Blackhawks fell to the Red Wings 3-2 in overtime on Sunday during the same day they honored Chris Chelios by retiring his #7.

Lost in the excitement of everything that was the Chelios-Kane fest on Sunday was that the Blackhawks have points in consecutive games but are still on a four-game losing streak.

Tonight brings in the Colorado Avalanche, who are one of the top teams in the league, but have split with the Hawks this year. Could Chicago find some more magic against the Avs tonight?

The Blackhawks have won just once in their last 13 games and just twice in the last 15 games. They’ve been close, including against the Red Wings, holding a 2-1 lead into the final ten minutes of the third, but it was former Hawks Kane and Alex DeBrincat who spurred on the comeback that led to the win.

Now the Hawks host the Avalanche and have a game where they’re trying to avoid a fifth consecutive loss, a reoccurring theme for a group that has seen its fair share–and likely enough of longer strings of losses.

Tonight doesn’t make for any easier of a contest as the Avs have the red-hot Predators nipping at their heels while they’re trying to get into second place in the Central.

So tonight is the sign of anything where they can not only hold onto a lead, but close the game with a much needed victory. A late start because of national coverage, maybe they’ll catch the Avs snoozing?
