Blackhawks Game Day
Blackhawks Game #65: The Little Game Within the Game
The Chicago Blackhawks (16-43-4) host the Arizona Coyotes (26-33-5) at the United Center today at 5pm. This is the second meeting for the teams in three games. The Blackhawks beat the Coyotes on Tuesday.
Previously on Blackhawks Hockey:
The Blackhawks fell to Washington 4-1 last night, a game that saw them unravel early after a three-goal outburst from the Capitals. Connor Bedard had a heck of a game in the loss, and his star is really beginning to rise despite the propensity for losses.

Scouting the Opponent & Miscellaneous Musings
Arizona and Chicago just played on Tuesday and the Blackhawks stunned the Coyotes with a four-goal outburst of their own–all on the power play. But with the game in between for both teams, Arizona shut out a suddenly spiraling Detroit Red Wings team while the Hawks were humbled by Washington.
Heading into today’s game as well, the Blackhawks were officially eliminated from the playoffs. Hardly a surprise, but still one of those things that never sits well with a fan when it comes to their favorite team.
Head coach Luke Richardson talked pregame yesterday about the “little game within a game.” This is really how Hawks fans should watch the team in the 18 games that remain. With short-term deals that general manager Kyle Davidson has handed out in his tenure, the next two seasons will continue the trend of a game within a game as players have roster spots on the line.
One focus would be Colin Blackwell and Tyler Johnson–both players that many thought would be dealt before the trade deadline. Both stayed–and as I’ve argued previously, Blackwell should really get an extension for what he brings to the team. Johnson continues to score goals–and depth wise for a team likely bringing up younger players, he’d be another great voice to have on and off the ice.
These are the little things to watch as the season winds down. In the meantime, a win here or there to break up the monotony of losing would be optimal, too. They’re still playing for pride, and no matter that the San Jose Sharks are in all out tank mode, there’s still that long term vision that’s important for the young core being built.
