Blackhawks Daily: Behind the Scenes of the NHL Draft Lottery

Published

on

The anticipation for the 2024 NHL Draft Lottery was high on Tuesday. The Chicago Blackhawks were hoping to win the draft lottery for the second year in a row. Instead, they remained right where they were slotted, earning the right to select second overall in the 2024 NHL Draft.

Let the debate begin on whether it should be Ivan Demidov or Artyom Levshunov being taken at number two. Maybe even someone else? Perhaps trading down?

It was the San Jose Sharks who retained that first overall pick. They will get Celebrini who is coming off a Hober Baker winning freshman season at B.U. He will be amazing for them for a long time.

In a fascinating story, San Jose Hockey Now’s Sheng Peng was given full access to the Lottery in Secaucus, New Jersey. Peng chronicled his experience at the NHL Draft Lottery and for those that had their tin foil cap handy had Utah won the whole thing, well, it turns out that the system is pretty air tight.

Right after the lottery ended, ESPN flipped to game two between the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes. This was one of the best games of the playoffs as it was a back and forth affair.

At the end of the third period, extra hockey was needed as they were all knotted up at three apiece. After a scoreless first overtime, it was Vincent Trocheck scoring the game-winner on the power play.

Meanwhile, the Dallas Stars were shining early as they took a 3-0 lead. Ryan Suter scored the first goal which got them going from the blue line. After that, Wyatt Johnston and Jamie Benn added to the lead.

From there, the Avalanche took over. They came back to get it tied as Valeri Nichuskin, Cale Makar, and Nathan MacKinnon scored to knot it up 3-3.

Miles Wood scored on a breakaway in overtime to give the Avalance a 4-3 win and a 1-0 series lead. It was a truly remarkable comeback for the Avalanche.

Definitely an exciting day in the hockey world on another Tuesday in May.

Blackhawks In Case You Missed It

Blackhawks 2 Truths and a Lie looks at what Kyle Davidson said following the lottery–while also trying to figure out what he said without saying it.

Davidson also was thrilled with getting the second overall pick, as it provides the Blackhawks a number of options that will hopefully add another foundational piece to an already impressive prospect pool

The Chicago Blackhawks extended Lukas Reichel. He is sticking around on a two-year deal as he tries to continue his development.

Arvid Soderblom has a lot of work to do if he is going to become a full-time NHL player who helps the Chicago Blackhawks win.

Ethan Del Mastro will be a full-time Chicago Blackhawks player in short order. He had a big year in 2023-24.
