Blackhawks Prospect Preview: Consistency in the Crease

Published

on

An intense workout regimen and a consistent performance with Boston University. Netminder Drew Commesso makes the jump to the professional ranks. Will that road lead to the Chicago Blackhawks?

A closer look at the 22-year-old goalie.

Consistency Key for Commesso

The hallmark of his time spent at BU was his consistency. Not only did his save percentage stay all but equal in three seasons–so too did his positioning in the net. From CHN back a few months ago:

Commesso is calm and steady in the paint, unlikely to be out of position to perform a desperation save. Instead, he’ll square the shooter or use his 6’2 frame to look around a screen before going down to the ice. Commesso doesn’t overcommit, he’s patient and his impressive numbers speak to that.  In short, be at the international or collegiate level, there’s no panic in his game. Commesso comes off as unbelievably patient, letting the puck come to him instead of trying to do too much.

Heading to Rockford, the challenge intensifies competing against professional veterans as well as younger skaters who are looking to find their way to the NHL. The IceHogs will have their fair share of younger players looking to make their mark–Colton Dach, and Nolan Allan among others. The time in Rockford could be a tremendous opportunity for development of its own homegrown talent.

Consistency, of course, will be that key. The AHL-NHL pipeline doesn’t always allow for that as injuries and performance alter the look of the farm club. Look no further than last season.

It’s likely that Commesso is eased into his role. But the consistency that has gotten him this far will be the building block to send him to the Blackhawks down the road.

The Measured Prediction

Commesso finds his footing early and showcases the consistency he’s known for–as well as seeing a lot of starts as the season rolls on.
